Duyun Maojian tea is a kind of Chinese green tea and is one of the top 10 famous Chinese teas, produced in Duyun City, Guizhou Province, and is also one of the top 3 famous Guizhou teas.

Duyun Maojian tea is also called “Fishhook Tea” or “Bird’s Tongue Tea” because the tea leaves of Duyun Maojian are curled like fishhook or bird’s tongue. The name “Duyun Maojian” is named by Chairman Mao in 1956.

1. The history of Duyun Maojian Tea

According to historical records, as early as the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), at that time Duyun Maojian tea called “Fishhook Tea”, it was a royal tribute. By the Qing Dynasty (AD 1636-1912), Fishhook Tea began to be exported abroad.

In 1956, Duyun municipal government sent Fishhook tea to Chairman Mao for tasting. Shortly afterward, the government received a letter from the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. The letter was signed by Chairman Mao at the bottom of the letter: “The tea is very good. In the future, should grow more this kind of tea tree on the hillside. The tea can be named ‘Maojian’.”

Note: the “Mao” of “Maojian” means “Hair” because the finished Maojian tea leaves are covered with a layer of white fluffs.

In June 1982, Duyun Maojian ranked second after Nanjing Yuhua tea in the evaluation of famous green tea in China. At the same year, it was awarded one of the top 10 famous Chinese tea at the national famous tea evaluation meeting held in Hunan Province.

Since then, Duyun Maojian tea won many awards of high-quality green tea in many competitions and expositions.

On December 12, 2016, Duyun Maojian ranked fourth in the list of tea brand value of 21.148 billion yuan (about 7 billion dollars) at the “Information Conference of Chinese Brand Value Evaluation 2016”.

2. The growth environment of Duyun Maojian Tea

Duyun City is located in the south of Guizhou Province. It has a rare climate of warm winter and cool summer for tourism and vacation in China.
