Duyun Maojian tea is a kind of Chinese green tea and is one of the top 10 famous Chinese teas, produced in Duyun City of Guizhou Province. It is also a national geographic indication product of China and is one of the top 3 famous teas in Guizhou Province.
Duyun Maojian is also called “Fishhook Tea” or “Bird’s Tongue Tea” because the tea leaves of Duyun Maojian are curled like fishhook or bird’s tongue. The name “Duyun Maojian” is named by Chairman Mao in 1956.
1. History of Duyun Maojian Tea
According to historical records, as early as the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), the predecessor of Duyun Maojian is called “Fishhook tea” and it was regarded as a royal tribute tea. By the Qing Dynasty (AD 1636-1912), Fishhook tea began to be exported abroad.
In 1956, Duyun municipal government sent Fishhook tea to Chairman Mao. Shortly afterward, the local government received a letter from Chairman Mao. The letter said, “The tea is very good. In the future, you should grow more this kind of tea on the hillside. The tea can be named ‘Maojian’.” Later, Chairman Mao also wrote a poem to praise Duyun Maojian.
The “Mao” of “Maojian” means “Hair” or “Fluff” because the finished Maojian tea leaves are covered with a layer of white fluffs.
In 1972, Duyun Maojian was sold to Japan for the first time and was welcomed by Japanese customers.
In June 1982, Duyun Maojian ranked second after Nanjing Yuhua tea in the evaluation of famous green tea in China. In the same year, it was awarded one of the top 10 famous Chinese tea at the national famous tea evaluation meeting held in Hunan Province.
Afterward, Duyun Maojian tea continuously won many awards of high-quality green tea in many competitions and expositions.
On December 12, 2016, Duyun Maojian ranked fourth in the list of tea brand value of 21.148 billion yuan (about 7 billion dollars) at the “Information Conference of Chinese Brand Value Evaluation 2016”.
In recent years, the development of Duyun Maojian is inseparable from good policies. The local government has issued a series of policies to promote the tea industry and implemented legislative protection around the goal of “developing industry of tea, benefiting the people with tea, and cultivating culture with tea”, so that Duyun Maojian embarked on the road of large-scale, standardized, branded industrialized development.
2. Growth environment of Duyun Maojian Tea
Duyun City is located in the south of Guizhou Province. It has a mild climate of warm winter and cool summer for tourism and vacation in China.
It has a subtropical humid monsoon climate; the valleys are undulating; the altitude is more than 1,000 meters; trees are lush; clouds and mists are pervasive; the four seasons are pleasant; the annual average temperature is 16℃.
In addition, the soil layer is deep, loose and moist, acidic, containing a lot of iron and phosphate. These special natural conditions are not suitable for the growth of tea trees, but also form a unique style of Duyun Maojian.

3. Characteristics of Duyun Maojian Tea
The picking period of Duyun Maojian is from the beginning of March to the beginning of May. The picking standard of the fresh leaves is single bud or one bud with one leaf and the length of it is not more than 2.0cm. Generally, it will take about 53k-56k buds to make 500g of special grade Duyun Maojian.
The shape of Duyun Maojian is fine, smooth, with green color, white fluffs, long-lasting fragrance, and mellow taste and its soup is clear and bright.
Duyun Maojian has the characteristics of “three yellow in green”. The color of dried tea leaves is yellow in green; the color of its soup is yellow in green; the color of brewed tea leaves is yellow in green.
