Ning Hong Tea

Ning Hong tea is a kind of Gongfu black tea, produced in Xiushui County of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province.

The Xiushui County is called Ning Zhou in ancient times, and “Hong” means the “black” of “black tea”, so it is called “Ning Hong”. Ning Hong tea is a specialty of Xiushui County and also a national geographical indication agricultural product.

As far back as the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), Xiushui County was rich in tea and began to produce black tea in the Qing Dynasty (AD 1636-1912). By the middle of the 19th century, Ning Hong tea had become one of the famous black teas at the time.

1. History of Ning Hong tea

According to historical records, Xiushui County has a history of tea production for more than 1,000 years. Ning Hong tea first appeared in the early 19th century and is earlier than the Keemun tea (Qihong or Qimen black tea).

By the middle of the 19th century, Ning Hong tea had become a famous tea and sold well in Europe and America.

From 1892 to 1894, Ning Hong tea gradually entered its heyday in the international tea market. At that time, the tea exports of Xiushui County accounts for one-tenth of that of the whole China.

After the founding of New China, Ning Hong Group Company had complete equipment and advanced technology and had become the largest professional factory of black tea production in Jiangxi Province.

In 1958, Ning Hong tea sold to the former Soviet Union was evaluated by foreign experts and reached the national high standard of black tea. In the same year, high-quality Ning Hong tea was sent to the State Council of China as a gift tea for foreign guests.

2. Growth environment of Ning Hong tea

Mountains in Xiushui are undulating and become the natural barrier for the outside world and Xiushui Country, with forest coverage of 67.6%, soil with rich nutrients and good permeability; influenced by the landform, clouds and mists are more, and the air is fresh like natural oxygen bar, which forms a unique natural ecological environment for the growth of Ning Hong tea.

3. Characteristics of Ning Hong tea

The picking standard of Ning Hong tea requires that the fresh leaves should be fresh, tender, and strong; most of them are one bud with one leaf or with two leaves; the size and length of the leaves should be similar.

The shape of Ning Hong tea is thin and tight, with black and yellow color, long-lasting fragrance, fresh and mellow taste and the color of the tea soup is bright and red.

According to its shape, color, and quality, Ning Hong tea can be classified into seven grades. The special grade Ning Hong tea leaves are covered with golden fluffs or hair. This high-quality Ning Hong tea is called Ning Hong Golden Hair.

In history, it was praised by the tea merchants from Britain, the United States, Germany, Russia, and Poland.

4. Drinking method of Ning Hong tea

According to whether or not to add other seasonings in the tea, it can be divided into two types: “clear drinking method” and “mixed drinking method”.

In most places of China, drinking black tea uses the “clear drinking method” and there is no habit of adding other seasonings to the tea. In some countries in Europe and America, the “mixed drinking method” is generally adopted, and people usually drink black tea with milk and sugar.

In the former Soviet Union, people especially like to drink lemon black tea and sugar tea. When drinking tea, they often add a lot of sugar, honey, or lemon slices.
