Cloud Tea (Yunwu Tea)

Cloud tea also called Yunwu tea in Chinese pinyin is a kind of Chinese green tea. Yun means “Cloud” and Wu means “Mist”, so sometimes it is called Cloud and Mist Tea.

The reason it is called cloud tea is that the tea trees are growing in the mountains with high altitude covered with cloud and mist. The climate here is mild and humid, and the soil is rich in organic substances, which is suitable for the growth of tea.

Cloud tea is tight and thin in shape, curled and beautiful. It is famous for its green color, mellow taste and beautiful appearance after brewing.

There are many kinds of cloud tea produced in different mountains in China. Here are the main famous varieties:

The Chinese pinyin “Shan” above means “Mountain”.

1. Lushan cloud tea

Lushan cloud tea was originally a kind of wild tea. Later, a famous monk reformed the wild tea into a cultivated tea.

Lushan cloud tea appeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD) and was listed as tribute tea in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). It is named after the Lushan (Lu Mountain) located in Jiangxi Province, is a national 5A scenic spot, with an altitude of 1,484 meters, and is one of the top 10 famous Chinese mountains.

Lushan has a long history of growing tea trees. According to historical records, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, Buddhism was introduced into China. At that time, there were more than 300 Buddhist temples in Lushan, where monks gathered. They climbed dangerous cliffs and planted tea trees.

Until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 BC), after Hongwu Emperor ascended the throne, Lushan was more famous and began to produce Lushan tea in large quantities and soon became famous all over the country.

In 1982, Lushan cloud tea ranked among the 8 famous teas in the evaluation of 21 kinds of Jiangxi teas in Jiangxi Province. In the same year, Lushan cloud tea was designated as a famous tea in the evaluation of all Chinese teas.

The fresh tea leaves of Lushan cloud tea have a long growth period, so it has a high content of beneficial ingredients. The contents of theophylline and vitamin C are higher than that of other teas.

2. Yingshan cloud tea

Yingshan cloud tea is a specialty of Yingshan County of Hubei Province and is also a national geographical indication product of China. It has obvious characteristics of strong fragrance, mellow taste and can be brewed for many times.

Yingshan County is at the foot of the Dabie Mountains, which is a national 4A level scenic spot and national geological park. The local tea farmers started growing tea trees from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). Tea has become one of the main commodities in Yingshan County.

The tea trees are growing in the mountain with the highest altitude of 1,777 meters. The climate of the mountain is tropical and humid monsoon, with abundant rainfall, which is very suitable for growing tea trees.

3. Yuntaishan cloud tea

Yuntaishan cloud tea is a famous traditional Chinese tea, produced in Yuntaishan (Yuntai Mountain) located in Lianyungang City of Jiangsu Province. So Yuntaishan cloud tea is also called Lianyungang cloud tea.

The content of catechins and caffeine in Yuntaishan cloud tea is higher than other teas, which is an important factor that Yuntaishan cloud tea has a strong taste.

Yuntaishan cloud tea began to be made in the Jin Dynasty (265-420 AD) and was listed as a tribute tea in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). In 1980, Yuntaishan cloud tea is regarded as one of the top 4 famous teas in Jiangsu Province.

Yuntaishan is near the Yellow Sea, with a warm and humid climate. Yuntaishan is covered with cloud and mist, fresh air and high humidity, which make a superior growth environment for tea trees.

4. Guiding cloud tea

Guiding cloud tea, also known as Bird King tea, is a traditional Chinese tea, which is produced in Guiding County of Guizhou Province.

Guiding County has a history of more than 2000 years of tea planting, more than 600 years of tribute tea. Brilliant tea culture created a series of famous Guiding cloud tea, which makes it outstanding and famous at home and abroad.

The history of tribute tea of Guiding cloud tea is recorded from Yuan, Ming, Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. Guiding cloud tea is sold to more than ten countries and regions, such as Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, etc. In 1993, the Chinese government took the tea as gift tea for foreign guests.

5. Laoshan cloud tea

Laoshan is located in Nanjing City, the capital of Jiangsu Province. (Note: another mountain also called Laoshan is located in Shangdong Province.)

Laoshan is adjacent to Laoshan National Forest Park and has been favored by scholars since the Tang Dynasty.

The local farmers have an ancient tradition of planting tea trees. Laoshan cloud tea is directly picked from the top of the mountain. It has high quality with smooth and elegant color and mellow taste.

In recent years, according to the requirements of ecological standardization, local people have carefully planted and produced a lot of high-quality tea products.

6. Wuyishan cloud tea

Wuyishan cloud tea gare growing in the cracks of the rocks in Wuyishan, so Wuyishan cloud tea is also called Wuyishan cloud rock tea.

Wuyishan (Wuyi Mountain) is located in Fujian Province. The highest altitude of Wuyishan is 2,158 meters, with a subtropical climate and mild and humid temperature and the rocks are infiltrated by springs all the year around. This special natural environment creates a special quality of Wuyishan cloud tea.

7. Putuoshan cloud tea

Putuoshan cloud tea also called Putuoshan Buddha tea is a special product of Zhoushan City of Zhejiang Province, produced in Putuoshan (Putuo Mountain). It is also a national agricultural product geographical indication of China.

The production of Putuoshan cloud tea has a long history. The planting of it began in the Tang Dynasty more than a thousand years ago. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1875-1908), Putuoshan cloud tea was listed as a tribute tea.

Putuoshan is named “Tea Mountain” because it is rich in tea. The Putuoshan cloud tea trees are growing at the top of the mountain.
