Fu Brick tea also called Fu Zhuan tea in Chinese Pinyin is a kind of traditional Chinese dark tea.
The famous Fu Brick teas are Anhua Fu Brick tea produced in Anhua County of Hunan Province and Jingyang Fu Brick tea produced in Jingyang County of Shanxi Province.
The shape of the finished Fu Brick tea is like brick and the aroma of it is similar to Fuling (Poria cocos), or it is produced in “Fu Tian” (Hot summer days), so it is called Fu Brick tea.
1. History of Fu Brick Tea
Fu Brick Tea was first created around 1860. At that time, Hei Mao tea, the raw material for producing Fu Brick tea, produced in Hunan Province was transported to Jingyang County to be made into Fu Brick Tea.
The Hei Mao tea produced in Hunan Province is very famous and has high quality. And Jingyang County of Shanxi Province is the best place to produce Fu Brick tea due to its climate, water quality, and tea-producing technology. So Fu Brick tea is produced in two different places at that time.
In the early 19th century, there were as many as 86 shops selling Fu Brick tea in Jingyang County and it has been exported to over 40 counties such as Russia, Britain, and Persia.
The climate in Jingyang County is suitable for producing Fu Brick tea, but not for growing tea trees. In 1985, in order to save costs, the Central Government of China requested that factories producing Fu Brick tea should be transferred to the original place of the tea (Hunna Province).
Thereafter, the production of Fu Brick tea in Jingyang gradually decreased or even stopped. And Anhua County began to study the technology of producing brick tea and to produce. The Fu Brick tea produced in Anhua County is called Dark Brick tea (Hei Zhuan tea).
After the 20th century, with the improvement of living standards, people are more interested in traditional products. Tea merchants in Jingyang County want to revitalize their former glory, so in 2007, they began to resume the production of traditional Fu Brick tea.
In 2013, Jingyang Fu Brick tea has become a national geographical indication protection product of China, and its production technology has been selected as the intangible cultural heritage protection project in Shanxi Province.
